Glo Skin Beauty Shadow Quad - Cityscape

Four coordinated mineral eyeshadows in one palette, so you don't have to figure out which colors work well together yourself.

Why it works

The hardest part of eyeshadow isn't the application, but the combination. In a quad, that work is already done for you: a light shade for the entire lid, a mid-tone for the crease, a dark one for depth, and usually one with a shimmer to catch the light.

The formula is talc-free and uses mineral pigments. Talc is the filler found in many powder shadows that often makes color look flat and dusty; without talc, you get more color from less product. Glo adds green tea extract and vitamins A, C, and E—all antioxidants. The texture is velvety soft with minimal fallout, which you'll notice because nothing flakes off under your eyes while you're working. The color is buildable: applied lightly, it gives a sheer wash; in layers, it becomes deeper.

About these shades

Cityscape is the coolest palette in the range. Dove is a cool purple-grey, Graphite a gunmetal grey, Haze a soft neutral pink, and Horizon a vibrant opalescent shade with a shimmer. For those who find grey and pink more flattering than brown and gold.

For whom

For those who love working with color but don't want to think about which ones go together. It's also great if you don't have much eyeshadow and want a complete set in one go: this palette covers both your daily look and a darker evening version. And for mature skin: matte shades sit more calmly on an eyelid with fine lines than shimmery ones, and each palette includes several.

How to use it

Start with an eyeshadow base on your lid; without a base, any powder shadow will fade sooner. Then take the lightest shade over your entire eyelid, the mid-tone in the crease, and work the darkest shade only into the outer corner. Always tap your brush off before touching your eye; this prevents an overly harsh initial application, which is difficult to remove afterward. Work from less to more: adding more is easier than taking it away. You can also use the darkest shade as an eyeliner with a damp fine-tipped brush.

A final tip

The skin around your eyes is thinner than elsewhere on your face, and there is no fat layer beneath it to absorb pressure. What I notice in the salon every time is how hard people work on that eyelid: back and forth with the brush, smudging, starting over. Over time, that daily pulling does more damage than any product you put on it. Keep a light hand and let the brush do the work.

And honestly: a quad is no promise that you will suddenly be able to blend. The first few times it will feel awkward, and that's perfectly normal. What makes the difference is not more product, but more layers.
