Why it works

The trickiest part of an eyeliner is not the color, but the tip. A stiff tip drags across the delicate skin of your eyelid: your line becomes jagged and you pull on an area that really doesn't appreciate it. This liner has a fine, elongated, and supple felt tip that bends with the shape of your eye and releases product evenly, without dragging or pulling.

The formula dries quickly into a matte line and, according to the manufacturer, is long-lasting and resistant to smudging and transferring onto your upper eyelid. It also contains caffeine, ginseng extract, and arginine: ingredients that nourish the skin along the lash line instead of just applying color to it.

About this color

Black is deep black with a matte finish. No shine and no blue undertones: the classic choice, and the color that provides the most definition.

For whom

For anyone who wants their eyes to pop without using much eyeshadow. Liner can also work beautifully on more mature or slightly hooded eyelids; it is best to keep the line thin and close to the lashes so that it unfolds with the eye instead of following the crease.

How to use it

Apply it to your upper lash line, following the natural shape of your eye. First, place a few dots or short dashes along the lash line and then connect them; that gives a much smoother result than trying to do it in one single stroke. For a wing, let the line curve slightly upward at the end, in line with your eyebrow. And rest your pinky on your cheek; it helps more than you might think.

A word of advice

The skin around your eye is the thinnest on your entire face and has no layer of fat underneath to cushion the pressure. What I see happen most often with eyeliner is the eyelid being pulled toward the temple with a finger to get a straight line. Try to avoid doing that, or at least not every day: in the long run, that tugging is more noticeable than the line you gain from it. Instead, look slightly down into the mirror and let the lid lie relaxed.

And here is some honest advice about liquid liner: this is a product that requires practice. The first few weeks, it probably won't look the way you envisioned. Feel free to draw a thinner line than you actually want, as that is much more forgiving.
