Why it works

Powder eyeshadow needs something to hold onto. On an eyelid that gets a little oilier throughout the day, powder collects in the crease, and by the afternoon, you see a line instead of a color. A cream formula works differently: it adheres to the skin itself and then sets into a layer that won't budge.

Glo uses mineral pigments in a base of hydrogenated jojoba oil, a softening ingredient that allows the stick to glide smoothly without tugging on the delicate skin of your eyelid. It also contains the antioxidants vitamin C and E. The manufacturer claims a wear time of up to twelve hours without the color creasing. How long it lasts on you depends on your skin and how warm the day is, but you will notice the difference compared to loose powder immediately.

The texture is creamy and blends easily. You have about half a minute to smudge the edges before it sets. On the other end of the stick is a sharpener, so the tip stays fine and you can also use it to draw a line.

For those who like to keep it simple: one stick serves as eyeshadow, as a base under powder eyeshadow, and as an eyeliner. It is also great if your eyes water easily or if powder always ends up under your eyes, as this formula does not fallout. And on more mature eyelids, where the skin is a bit looser and powder tends to settle into fine lines, a cream is usually the more flattering choice.

How to use it

Apply two or three strokes to your eyelid and blend them immediately with your ring finger or a short, firm brush. Immediately—that is the whole point: once the formula sets, it won't move and every edge stays right where you placed it. It is better to build it up in two thin layers rather than one thick one. If you want a line, sharpen the tip with the sharpener and draw it briefly along your lash line.

A final tip

The skin around your eye is thinner than the rest of your face and lacks a layer of fat underneath to absorb pressure. What I see most often in the treatment room is that this area is overworked: rubbing, correcting, rubbing again. In the long run, that daily pulling does more damage than any product applied to it. So, use a light hand, and tap away an edge instead of wiping it.

And a little honesty: a cream shadow stays on well, but it is not indestructible. On a hot day or on naturally oily eyelids, it may still shift. A thin base layer underneath makes more of a difference than a thicker layer of shadow.
