Why it works

Shine and care rarely go hand in hand: many shiny lip products look reflective but dry out your lips in the process because they lack nourishing ingredients. This formula is built around shea butter and mango seed oil, two fats that stay on the lip and lock in moisture. This is combined with an antioxidant complex featuring vitamins C and E and plant extracts, which protects the lips against external aggressors. The shine therefore doesn't come from a separate layer on top, but from the fatty base itself. That is precisely why it is non-sticky.

The texture is creamy and glides on without dragging. It provides full color payoff and continues to feel like a balm, not like makeup.

About this shade

Heirloom is a muted rose with a neutral undertone: the pink of a faded vintage fabric, not the pink of a piece of candy. Neither warm nor distinctly cool, which makes it suitable for almost any skin tone. Medium-depth and medium-coverage, so it is visible without being overpowering.

Who it's for

For anyone whose lips feel dry or tight quickly and therefore usually sticks to a balm: here you get that same comfort, but with color. Also great if you notice your lips thinning out, as shine catches the light and makes the lips appear fuller than a matte color would. And if you normally don't wear lipstick because it's too much of a hassle: this is a pencil you can apply without a mirror.

How to use it

First, trace the edge of your lip with the tip and then fill it in. You can also layer it over a matte lip crayon to add depth to the color instead of a flat look. What often goes wrong: pressing too hard. The formula is soft, you need very little pressure, and this helps the tip stay in good shape longer. Sharpen it occasionally with a crayon sharpener. By the way, it also works on the cheeks and eyelids, which is handy if you want to pull a single color through your entire look.

My advice

In the studio, I often see dry lips with a matte color applied on top, which only makes them look tighter. If your lips are flaky, don't start with color but with a day or two of balm, and then bring in this crayon. It simply looks much better on a smooth lip. And honestly: shine doesn't last as long as matte. Count on a few hours and keep it in your bag. That's not a flaw in the formula; that's just what shine does.
