Obagi Medical - C-Clarifying Serum

A serum for pigment spots and an uneven complexion: spots from the summer, shadows after a breakout, and areas that darken more than the rest.

Why it works

Pigmentation occurs because the pigment cells in your skin become overactive, usually due to UV light, sometimes due to inflammation or hormones. Those who only scrub or exfoliate remove the top layer but leave the source untouched, and then the spot simply returns. This serum works on two levels. Arbutin inhibits the enzyme your skin needs to produce pigment, so it intervenes at the source. Ten percent L-ascorbic acid complements this: it captures free radicals and contributes to a more even complexion.

The texture is light and watery, and absorbs quickly.

For whom

For normal to oily, normal to dry, or combination skin with sun spots, age spots, or dark spots after acne. Also if your skin is generally fine but just looks uneven: unevenness often makes a complexion look more tired than fine lines do.

How to use it

In the morning, after cleansing and toning, on dry skin. Five to seven drops for your entire face, massage in gently, then follow with your cream.

And now the part that determines the result: daily sun protection with a high SPF, all year round. Pigmentation is triggered by UV. If you work on spots without daily protection, you are closing one tap while the other remains open.

What I would like you to know

Pigment is the slowest work there is in skincare, and I prefer to say that upfront rather than afterwards. Count on three months before you see a clear difference, and longer for the deeper spots. They will become lighter and softer at the edges; they rarely disappear completely.

What I frequently see go wrong in the treatment room: people work on their spots for months and then go on a trip for a week without a hat or sunscreen. Two weeks later, it’s all back. One summer without protection undoes more than a year of serum can make up for. So, if you are investing time and money into this, the sunscreen is not the optional extra—it is half the plan.
